Wedding at Convento de Sandelgas | Maria + Ricardo

Beer, Tradition, and the Streets of Aveiro

Ricardo and his friends didn't start the day with formal jitters. Instead, they kicked things off at Bodegas, a local staple in Aveiro, sharing beers and laughs before heading to the ceremony at Igreja Vera Cruz. As a documentary wedding photographer in Portugal, I love capturing these unscripted, relaxed moments that happen long before the vows.

The Walk to Largo de São Gonçalinho

The moments following the ceremony were deeply rooted in local tradition. Because Ricardo and the bride’s father were Mordomos de São Gonçalinho, the entire wedding party walked through the streets of Aveiro together. The group made its way to Largo de São Gonçalinho, singing all the way. Once inside the Capela de São Gonçalinho, they sang a typical song dedicated to the saint—a powerful scene for any Portugal wedding photographer to document.

From Alentejo Rhythms to Al Fresco Dining

The transition to Convento de Sandelgas brought a change of pace. A band from Alentejo kept the cocktail hour moving, setting a lively tone before everyone sat down for the main event.

  • The Decor: The tables were a standout feature—vibrant, colorful, and decorated with a mix of fresh flowers and grapes.

  • The Dinner: Taking advantage of the evening, the meal was served outdoors. For those planning a destination wedding in Portugal, this open-air setting is a perfect example of how to use the local climate and architecture.

A Superhero Surprise

Maria wore a wedding dress from Plissê Atelier, a choice that fit the setting perfectly. While the dinner was refined and scenic, the late-night party took a turn for the unexpected. Seeing two friends appear on the dance floor in full Spider-Man suits was a highlight that no one saw coming, shifting the energy into a high-spirited celebration.

This day was a great example of how different elements—from neighborhood traditions in Aveiro to a historic convent—can come together to tell a complete story through authentic wedding photography.
